Jesus Over All

In 1937, Chiune Sugihara, a Japanese diplomat in Lithuania, faced a choice. Jewish families, fleeing the Nazis, begged him for visas—documents that could save their lives. His government ordered him to stop. But Sugihara, moved by their desperation and by his Christian faith, quietly kept writing visas day and night. He did this because he knew he owed his allegiance to the one who is truly over all. Because of his courage, over 6,000 Jews were able to escape the concentration camps that so many of their countrymen died in.

Colossians 1:15–20

This passage gives us a powerful picture of Jesus—not just as a teacher or helper, but as King over everything. Paul says Jesus is the visible image of the invisible God. He created everything—from stars and mountains to people and puppies—and holds it all together. Jesus existed before anything, and He’s the head of the church. He’s the first to rise from the dead, showing His power over death. Through Jesus, God brought peace to all things—earth and heaven alike. These verses remind us that Jesus is supreme—not distant, but present in our daily lives, holding our families, our futures, and even our small struggles.

Things to Ponder

  • What does it mean to say Jesus is in charge of everything? Can we see His care in our day-to-day lives?

  • When something feels chaotic, how could remembering that Jesus “holds all things together” help you?

  • Are there areas in your life where you try to stay in control instead of letting Jesus lead?

  • What do you think Jesus sees when He looks at your ordinary day—school, chores, meals, and quiet time?

  • What might change in our family if we lived like Jesus was over all—our words, plans, and problems?

Application Challenge

What would it look like this week to recognize Jesus’ authority in the small moments—when you're frustrated, rushed, or feeling forgotten? Maybe it’s whispering, “Jesus, You’re still in charge” when plans fall apart. Maybe it’s choosing kindness even when no one sees, because He sees everything.

Could God be using ordinary moments—like family dinners, hallway chats, or homework meltdowns—as places where His peace can show up through you? Each time we remember that Jesus is over all, we take a small but powerful step of faith.

Prayer Prompt

Jesus, You made the stars and You hold our everyday lives. Help us remember that You are over everything, even the hard or boring parts of the day. Teach us to trust You when things feel out of control. Show us how to live with peace, knowing You are near and You are good. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
