One Last Chance
Imagine This
An older man walked into his backyard carrying a chainsaw and headed straight for an apple tree.
A neighborhood boy who often played nearby saw him and called out, "Why are you cutting down your apple tree?"
The man stopped and sighed.
"Because I've given this tree years to produce apples, and it still hasn't grown a single one. I've watered it, pruned it, and cared for it, but it's just taking up space in my yard."
The boy looked at the tree for a moment.
"Would you give it one more year?" he asked. "Let me take care of it. I'll water it, fertilize it, and do everything I can to help it grow. If it still doesn't produce fruit after that, then you can cut it down."
The homeowner paused... then slowly lowered the chainsaw.

Scripture Overview
Just before telling this parable, Jesus gave a sobering warning: "Unless you repent, you too will all perish" (Luke 13:3, 5). The story of the barren fig tree helps explain what He meant.
In the parable, a man has a fig tree planted in his vineyard. Year after year he comes looking for fruit, but finds none. Finally, he tells the gardener to cut it down because it is wasting valuable space.
The gardener responds, "Sir, leave it alone for one more year." He promises to dig around it, fertilize it, and give it every opportunity to produce fruit. If it still bears no fruit after that, then it can be cut down.
The tree represents someone who has received God's care and blessing but has not responded with repentance and a changed life. Just as a healthy fruit tree naturally produces fruit, genuine faith should produce a life that is increasingly marked by obedience to God.
The good news is that God is patient. He does not delight in judgment. He gives people opportunity after opportunity to turn to Him.
But His patience is not meant to make us comfortable in our sin.
It is meant to lead us to repentance.
Every day we wake up is another reminder of God's mercy. Every opportunity to hear His Word, every conviction of the Holy Spirit, every chance to turn back to Him is evidence that He has not given up on us.
But Jesus also reminds us that this opportunity will not last forever.

What kind of "fruit" should be growing in the life of someone who follows Jesus?

Practice This Week
Spend a few minutes asking God to examine your heart.
Is there a sin you've been excusing?
A step of obedience you've been delaying?
A relationship that needs to be restored?
Don't assume you'll always have another opportunity.
Thank God for His patience, and respond to Him while He is giving you time to grow.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for being patient with us. We know we have often failed to live the way You have called us to live, yet You continue to show us mercy.
Help us not to take Your patience for granted. Give us hearts that are quick to repent and lives that bear fruit for Your glory.
Thank You for giving us another day to follow You.
